Best of both Apples: 2015

Today I had an appointment at the German Consulate to apply for a new passport. It took about an hour of taking a photograph, providing documents, signing forms and paying a fee. But then it was done finally. Now it's another 8 to 10 weeks wait before the new passport is ready. Plus I made today's appointment more than two months ago! So definitely not a thing to do last minute!

After that a short visit at Petra's office and then I took a little walk along 42nd Street and 5th Avenue before heading home again. Here are some impressions:

... a Revolutionary War Reenactment in Easton, CT

Mardi Gras in September? Early Halloween this year?

No, just some (crazy) history-loving Americans showing how military life was about 230 years ago.

"On July 18, 1781 Lt. Ebenzer Morehouse along with five other men were taken prisoner by a British raiding party of approximately 60 men who landed at Compo Beach, Westport. The raiding party was bent on plunder and destruction. Lt. Morehouse, the senior officer, so irritated his captors that the British marched to his farm and burned it."

About 100 reenactors dressed in period costumes, equipped with period weapons, tools and accessories explained everything you wanted to know about the time of the Revolutionary War.

Camp sites with some cooking going on, seamstresses at work, a white smith (tinner) manufacturing a lantern, a surgeon explaining his bloody business and so on and so on. And of course soldiers: the 54th Regiment of Foot from England alongside Butler's Rangers and Delancey's Regiment (infantry and cavalry) raised in the colonies fighting for their country and King George. On the other side it was the 5th Connecticut Regiment and the Lebanon Towne Militia defending their self-declared independence and freedom. All dressed in their respective uniforms with replicas of weapons and gear.

Military drill was shown and tactics were explained. And of course in the end there was a reenactment of a (fictive) skirmish at Morehouse Farm.

All in all a very nice and entertaining afternoon that would have deserved a bigger audience.

Karneval im September? Verfrühtes Halloween dieses Jahr?

Nein, nur einige (verrückte) geschichtsverliebte Amerikaner, die zeigen, wie man sich das militärische Leben vor rund 230 Jahren vorstellen muss.

"Am 18. Juli 1781 wurde Lt. Ebenzer Morehouse zusammen mit fünf weiteren seiner Männer von einem ca. 60 Mann starken britischen Kommandounternehmen, die in Compo Beach, Westport, gelandet waren, gefangen genommen. Ziel des Kommandounternehmens war das Plündern und Zerstören. Lt. Morehouse, der befehlshabende Offizier, hat dabei die Briten so geärgert, dass sie zu seiner Farm marschiert sind und sie niedergebrannt haben."

Etwa 100 Darsteller in historischer Kleidung, ausgerüstet mit entsprechenden Waffen, Werkzeugen und Zubehör haben einem alles erklärt, was man über die Zeit des Unabhängigkeitskrieges wissen wollte. Feldlager mit Kochstellen, Schneiderinnen bei der Arbeit, ein Blechschmied beim Herstellen einer Laterne, ein Feldarzt, der seine blutige Beschäftigung (sehr anschaulich) erklärt hat und so weiter und so weiter. Und natürlich Soldaten: das 54. Fussregiment aus England zusammen mit Butler's Rangers und Delancey's Regiment (Infanterie und Kavallerie) ausgehoben in den Kolonien, um für König George und das Vaterland zu kämpfen. Auf der anderen Seite das 5. Connecticut Regiment und die Lebanon Towne Miliz, um ihre selbst erklärte Unabhängigkeit und Freiheit zu verteidigen. Alle in historisch korrekten Uniformen, mit Repliken der damaligen Waffen und Ausrüstung.

Militärischer Drill wurde vorgeführt und die Taktiken der Zeit erklärt. Und natürlich gab es am Ende auch eine Vorführung des (fiktiven) Gefechts bei der Morehouse Farm.

Alles in allem ein sehr schöner und unterhaltsamer Nachmittag, der ein grösseres Publikum verdient hätte.
